Pretty Villages

Wentworth is a quaint but fascinating historic village north of Rotherham. The village has two churches, traditional Yorkshire pubs serving Wentworth Beer and a garden centre occupying land once used as the kitchen garden of Wentworth Woodhouse.

Browse the antique shops at Wentworth Forge, watch the blacksmith display his skills or just enjoy a visit to the tearooms. Lovely walks include the Wentworth Countryside Doorstep Walk, taking in the hamlet of Street, Needle's Eye, Elsecar Heritage Centre and Kings Wood.

Hoober Stand

Hoober Stand, with its base standing 518 feet above sea level, commemorates the quelling of the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745.

It consists of a triangular tower 85 feet high. At the top there is a flat platform with a parapet and a hexagonal domed cupola off centre. The Cupola provided a roof over the spiral staircase. The total height is almost 100 feet.

Hoober Stand is immediately adjacent to a public footpath off Lea Brook.

Needle's Eye

The Needle's Eye is a pyramidical tower in Lee Wood. At the top of the tower there is stone urn. The base of the tower is pierced by a carriageway flanked by stone seats.

Legend says that it was built in response to a wager by the Marquis of Rockingham to drive a horse and carriage through the eye of a needle.

It is immediately adjacent to a public footpath running from the junction of Coaley Lane and Street Lane to Elsecar Green.

The Mausoleum

The Mausoleum is architecturally the finest of the monuments built in 1788 in memory of the 2nd Marquis of Rockingham.

Built over a period of three years by ten men, it rises in three sections to a height of 90 feet and was designed by John Carr of York.

The ground floor section is an enclosed hall, surmounted by an open colonnade, with an arcade of Corinthian columns, and the third level consists of a cupola designed to resemble a Roman temple.

In the ground floor chamber was placed a life size statue of the 2nd Marquis and busts of eight political friends.

The Mausoleum is surrounded by private woodland, off Cortworth Lane in Nether Haugh.

Hoober Stand and the Mausoleum are open to the public from Spring Bank Holiday to August Bank Holiday with a small admission fee. Group visits can be arranged by telephoning the office on 01226 742041, or writing to:
