Birch Wood

A much-altered woodland on the steep slopes on both sides of the Collier Brook.

The canopy is broken, with 100 year old beech and sessile oak on the higher ground and 30-70 year old sycamore closer to the stream, all 15-20m tall. Generally the ground layer is poor in flowering plants, in common with most woodlands on the coal measures natural area.

Birch Wood is shown on the 1851 Ordnance Survey map with the same size and shape as today.
