The Trees and Woodlands Team

Who we are:

The Council's Trees and Woodlands team works towards providing a tree and woodland rich environment  to give as many amenity, landscape, wildlife, economic, cultural and social benefits as possible for all the people of Rotherham.

What we do:

  • The team acts as the Council's principal advisor on all matters relating to trees and woodlands in the borough.
  • Encourage better protection, care and management of trees and woodlands, particularly to maximise environmental opportunities. For example, we provide advice on trees and woodlands subject to planning regulations.
  • Ensure that all Council-owned trees and woodlands receive the best care in accordance with nationally recognised standards. The Council owns 482 hectares of woodland and is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of around 80,000 individual trees.
  • Subject to available resources provide general guidance to parish councils, public bodies and the general public on all aspects of tree and woodland management.
  • Provide a full 24 hour emergency tree callout service to inspect and make safe dangerous trees.

Achievements

  • The Council holds a current Forestry Stewardship Council certificate.
  • The Council has received a Heritage Lottery Fund Award, worth a total value of £549,000 over a five year period, to restore fourteen individual ancient woodlands.
  • Scholes Coppice received the Forestry Commission Centre of Excellence Award in recognition of the Council's management of wildlife, landscape and community involvement.
  • Scholes Coppice, Wath and Boyd Royd Wood and Barley Hall Plantation have been designated as examples of good practice by the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership.
