Arts in Rotherham - Choirs and Singing

Rotherham has some wonderful established choirs with a long and illustrious history, as well as new choirs, singing songs from all genres and traditions. This is a list of the choirs we have discovered in Rotherham in January 2011.

Event: 'From the East unto the West'

7.30 pm Saturday October 1st, at Rotherham Minster. Celebratory choral Music by Handel Bachand Parry will be performed by the Masterworks Chorale. Tickets £7.00 available from Masterworks Chorale

Anston Male Voice Choir

  • Details: Established in 1971 the choir offers a balance of classic and modern pieces, which it performs locally, on tour and on CD.
  • Rehearsal venue: Anston Parish Hall, Ryton Road , Anston, S25 4DL
  • Rehearsal times: Thursday 7.00 - 9.00pm

Double Octave

  • Details: The group began in 1985 to raise money for charity. They sing a wide programme of music from Bach to Lloyd Webber.
  • Rehearsal venue: Talbot Lane Methodist Church, Rotherham.
  • Rehearsal times: Wednesdays at 7.30pm

Kimberworth Park Male Voice Choir

  • Details: The choir are always looking for new members (men) who can sing. There is a full diary of concerts including performances at the Royal Albert Hall.
  • Rehearsal venue: Salvation Army Citadel, Kimberworth, Rotherham
  • Rehearsal times: Thursdays from 7.00 pm

Rawmarsh & District Choral Society

  • Details: RS&DCS gives annual concerts at Easter, October and Christmas, and regularly hosts guest soloists. They welcome new voices, especially Tenors and Bass.
  • Rehearsal venue: The Methodist Church , High Street Centre, Rawmarsh.
  • Rehearsal times: Fridays 7.15pm - 9.00pm

Rotherham Choral Society

  • Details: Over 70 members of this long established choir are committed to maintaining a high standard of choral music for local people to enjoy.
  • Rehearsal venue: Herringthorpe United Reform Church , Stag Roundabout, Rotherham
  • Rehearsal times: 7.30pm, Wednesdays, September to June.

South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir

  • Details: Founded in 1925, this is probably the oldest Police Male Voice Choir in the UK , and continues today to provide concerts and entertainment to support the many varied and good works of charity across the county of South Yorkshire and the surrounding areas.
  • Rehearsal venue: Hall Cross Upper School, Thorne Road, Doncaster
  • Rehearsal times: Mondays 7.00 - 9.00pm

Thorpe Hesley Village Choir

  • Details:This four part choir practices and performs a wide variety of choral music at weddings, concerts, churches etc. New members aged 18 and over are always welcome, no audition needed but must be able to sing in tune. Their CD "Thorpe Hesley Village Choir Sing Local Christmas Carols"; is available on request, £5.
