Arts in Rotherham - Drama, Theatre and Performance

Rotherham is host to a number of excellent professional and amateur Theatre companies, for all ages and abilities to take part in on stage, in the wings and in the audience. Please scroll down to see a list of some of the groups we have discovered in Rotherham in January 2011.

  • ISAN, The Independent Street Arts Network ISAN is an independent group of producers, presenters, promoters and artists working in outdoor arts who develop the outdoor arts sector through networking, lobbying, information-sharing, training, research, and advocacy support and advice for members.

  • ITC - Independent Theatre Council  The ITC is the professional body for performing arts organisations and individuals working in the field of drama, dance, opera and music theatre, mime and physical theatre, circus, puppetry, street arts and mixed media. They offer training in a variety of subjects from child protection to touring aboard.  

  • In addition, Julie Medla, Manager of the Dearne Playhouse Theatre in Goldthorpe,  is creating a website for artists and performers trying to find work. Starstruck UK can be used as an e-portforlio plus it will also enable casting agents, venues, galleries, talent scouts etc to search, view and contact .Julie is looking for people to become beta testers for the website.  The website is still under construction but anyone who wants to become involved are welcome to sign up on the registration page http://www.starstruckuk.com/ or can call Julie on 01709 894128 for more details.

Cake House Theatre Group

  • Details: This group was formed as an offshoot from Scope Rotherham Day Service to promote music, dancing and drama amongst adults with disabilities.

Cast Off Youth Theatre Group

  • Details: Castoffs is part of Rotherham Youth Service and provides drama, dance and singing opportunities for young people from across the borough aged 13 to 25. They also run drama activities during the holidays for disabled young people aged 13 to 25 on a 'play in a day' or 'panto in a day' format.

Far Out Theatre

  • Details: A community based theatre company who aim to produce theatre that is popular and challenging, whimsical and profound, home grown and far-flung, for the people living in and beyond the community.

Gillian Banks Theatre School

  • Details: The school provides a purposed built studio and specialised equipment and facilities to offer stgecraft, dance, aerial work, trapeze and ring. Qualified by 5 national examining boards including IDTA

Kimberworth Park Youth Theatre

  • Details: Professionally taught drama workshops for 6 - 18 years old covering a wide variety of skills from improvisation, devising and script work to confidence, team work and simply having fun!

The Lyric Theatre Junior Players

  • Details: This successful group formed in 2002 is for children and young people aged 5 - 16 from the villages surrounding Dinnington.
  • Rehearsal Venue: The Lyric Theatre, Laughton Road , Dinnington, Sheffield
  • Reheasal Times: Monday drama evenings 4:45pm - 6:45 pm. Tuesdays Street and hip hop dance 4:45pm - 6:45pm.

Open Minds Theatre Company

  • Details: OMTC as a range of classes for different age groups exciting and lively sessions giving young people the opportunity to learn about drama, dance and singing in a fun environment and enhance their speaking, listening, performance and social skills. They also work with young people in schools and develop courses for teachers incorporating drama in teaching methods.

Rotherham Amateur Repertory Company

  • Details: "Rotherham Rep" is the oldest dramatic society in the Borough, and is still going strong today with a varied programme of commissioned, collaborative and popular works.

Springwood Theatre Group

  • Details: If you like to sing dance and have fun then go along, all ages welcome from 6 to 76 and over!

Stagecoach Rotherham

  • Details: Quality training for four to eighteen year-olds in the disciplines of dance, drama and singing in a very safe and happy environment.
  • Lesson Venue:
  • St Bernard's High School on Herringthorpe Valley Road , Rotherham .
  • Reheasal Times: 6-18 years Saturdays 10:00am- 1.00pm, 4-6 years Saturdays 9:30am and 11:15am for one and a half hours.

Steps Productions

  • Details: A theatre group for young people aged 8-19 interested in acting, singing, dancing and performing as well as the backstage aspects of theatre.

  • Reheasal Times: Variable but usually between 6:00pm and 9:00pm weekdays and on Sundays (times vary).

Youth Theatre

  • Details: Why not join our experienced youth theatre classes and develop new performance skills and techniques. The classes are designed to encourage all to learn and enjoy together in a comfortable environment that will help you make new friends and bring out those hidden talents.
  • Rehearsal Venue: Rotherham Arts Centre
  • Reheasal Times: During school term-time  Monday (11-18 years) at either 5pm to 7pm or 7pm to 9pm; Workshops cost £2.50.
