Rotherham Open Art Show 2012

The Rotherham Open will be the first exhibition for the new Rotherham Art Gallery in Riverside,  running from 23rd June to 11th August 2012.  The 1st prize is £200, 2nd prize £100  and there is also a £50 Rotherham People's prize. 

To enter this years Open Art Show please email your name and address to cliftonparkmuseum@rotherham.gov.uk or call in to Clifton Park Museum for your appication form.  For details call 01709 336633.  The deadline for submission of entry forms is Friday 1st June. Entries open to artists aged 17 years or over. 

Workshops in the Castle

Cast are sing Call for Professional Actors

The Rotherham based partnership of Open Minds Theatre Company, On the Road Again productions and Plum Pie Media requires actors for paid work on a short tour in the autumn of an exciting new theatre and digital media performance. The 'Opus Hatch: He wants to Friend you' project is an innovative newly written, Arts Council funded piece that involves a core cast of professional actors with ensemble segments performed by local participants with acting and physical theatre experience. This is aimed at talented actors who want to gain more experience of paid work that can fit around other projects they may be doing. New: Taming of the Shrew in Urdu

Open Mnds Theatre Company is bringing an Urdu version of Taming of the Shrew to Rotherham and Bradford. Fresh from performing at The Globe on London's South Bank as part of the Globe to Globe festival,  Theatre Wallay,  an ensemble of talented Pakistani actors will be coming to Rotherham to perform Taming of the Shrew.

The Taming of the Shrew tour will bring to Yorkshire  popular and well known Pakistani actors including, Nadine Jamal, Lahori screen and stage star (Meri Jaan and The Ghost on Hum TV) and Omair Rana (starred in Tamanna, a Steven Moore movie). It is a special honour to secure the Taming of the Shrew tour for Yorkshire - the only play from the Globe Festival that is being toured outside of London . It is a very rich and energetic production that explores the lives of today's Pakistani community, and especially the role of women. 

Performances: Tuesday 29 May 7.00pm  at the Old Market Gallery, and Thursday 31 May 2.00pm in Clifton Park Walled Garden.  All tickets  £5 (conc: £3). For advance bookings call  07541 475159 and 07770 984704.

Host a Taming of the Shrew artist

Open Minds are looking for host families with  a home within a 4 mile radius from the town centre  for actors and artists of the Theatre Walley Company  from the 27th May to 1st June 2012. Host families will receive a thank you package which includes: Special reserved seats at one of the performances, an Invitedto the Rotherham welcome dinner at Orient Express on 27th May (evening), a signed picture of the famous cast members, and an invitation to the Rotherham community welcome on the 28th May 2012 at the Unity Centre. New: Metamorphosid Arkwright at the Civic

This surreal dark comed is set in the 1970s in the working men's club heartland of South Yorkshire , Metamorphosid Arkwright tells the story of club concert secretary Sid.

Steps new website has gone live and will soon be updated with reviews from NODA, The Rotherham Advertiser and video's from their presentation evenings.

Meeting Room Space at the Civic

Although meeting room space at the Arts Centre is no longer available, the Civic Theatre can host meetings. For information on charges and bookings, please contact Rotherham Theatres on 01709 823640 or 823621.

News on Artsmark

Arts Council England has selected Trinity College London as the national delivery provider for the Artsmark scheme between April 2012 and March 2015. Arts Council England is committing £4.5 million to the Artsmark programme during this time.  Artsmark, Arts Council England's national programme enables schools, further education colleges and youth justice settings to evaluate, celebrate and strengthen a quality arts offer, and supports formal education institutions to deliver rich and high quality provision.  For more information about the national scheme call Arts Council England  on 0207 973 6890.

Local Folk Hero on CD

Many of you will be familiar with the songs of Roy Blackburn, who has beeb creating music and drama in Rotherham for many years. His CD is now officially released,  costing £9.99 from Myke Barritt Committee Members, plus postage by mail from Acoustic Rotherham where Roy has a page of his very own. The CD will shortly be available on Amazon for MP3 Download. 

Gallerytown - call for fresh entries

Artists are invited to submit works for inclusion in the next pictures to be installed across Rotherham Town Centre in April 2012. The themes will include; Family, Holidays, and Waterside. The art work will be a mixture of well known pieces alongside work from local artists and schools. Would you like your work or the work of your school included in this exceptional exhibition? Westgate Chambers Studio Space now open

ROAR (Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance) has converted 5,000 square feet of town centre empty office space into low cost artists' studios and community space - suitable for workshops and temporary events and accessible to all. ROAR is now inviting artists and groups to register interest in taking up space and book their rehearsal or workshop space in the building in the future.

Join in - Gavin's New Collaborative Art Project

Gavin the performance poet, who has been leading the very poplular open mic poetry sessions at the Bridge Inn, is inviting all artists who would like to get involved in a collaborative art project to get in touch. Hearts of Steel Film and CD

Songs and stories and film, including rare archive footage of Rotherham, celebrating the heritage of the Steel industry in Rotherham is available in a special CD and a DVD box set, on sale for £10 from the Central Library and Arts Centre Box Office, at Clifton Park Museum and at Rotherham Visitor Centre, or for £15 online  or instore from The Famous Sheffield Shop.
