How to use your black bin
Bin collection times
An alternate weekly collection for the black bin is operated in Rotherham. Please put your bin out at correct location on your designated collection day by 7:00am. Return your bin as soon as possible following collection. Do not leave your bin out any longer than it needs to be!
Tip on using your black bin
Please follow the advice below when using your black bin:
- Do not overfill your bin or make it too heavy. Excess household waste can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.
- Make sure you can fully close the lid of the bin, this will help prevent insect getting in your bin. Also if your bin is over filled the emptying process can damage both your bin and the lifting equipment.
- Food waste that is placed in your black bin should be wrapped and sealed in a bag to minimise any smells that could attract flies.
- If you are placing bags in your black bin you should squeeze all air out of the bag. This will help to create more space in your bin.
- Try not to compact the contents of the bin too much as this makes it difficult for our collection vehicles to remove all the contents, also this could damage your bin. We recommend that you don't stand on top of your bin to try and get more waste in, this could split the sides of the bin and you could injure yourself.
Side waste
This is any rubbish that will not fit into the wheeled bins provided to you by the Council. To encourage residents to correctly separate their waste for recycling we will not collect any excess waste created. Additional household waste can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Assisted collections
The Council offers an assisted collection for all your kerbside collections to homes where, due to infirmity caused by illness or old age, and where there are no other persons able to place their container to the kerbside or their collection point for emptying. To apply for this service contact us for an application form.
My bin is damaged or split
