How to use your blue box

Someone putting out their Blue Box

Your blue box is collected together with your blue bag and green bin on the same day on an alternate week basis. The collection time may vary as two separate vehicles collect your containers, one for your blue box and blue bag and one for your green bin.

The reason for recycling

By using your blue box recycling service you have already helped to divert more than 37,000 tonnes of waste from landfill sites. This means Rotherham's recycling rate is at 41% which is a big increase from when the service started back in 2003. This is a better for the environment but it's better still by helping keep cost down. The Council has to pay tax on waste it sends to landfill so by using the blue box recycling scheme it helps to keep tax down.

What can I put in my blue box?

  • Glass bottles
  • Glass Jars
  • Tin Cans
  • Drink Cans
  • Food Cans
  • Tin Foil

Please place in a separate bag:

  • Clean Clothing
  • Bed Linen
  • Towels
  • Curtains
  • Pairs of shoes (provided they're wearable).

Any items not listed will be left in your blue box

Please rinse everything to remove food residues, and squash the aluminium cans where possible so they take up less space. (Wash and Squash!) If you find that you have extra recylables one week you can place these in a bag at the side of the blue box clearly marked what it is.

If you are putting out any type of textiles please place in a plastic bag and clearly mark it so we know its to take away for recycling this will also help to keep them dry.

Sorry we don't take:

  • Broken glass
  • Window glass
  • Drinking glasses
  • Light bulbs
  • Pyrex glass
  • Household rubbish
  • plastic
  • Foil crisp packets
  • Paint tins
  • Pillows
  • Duvets

Please DON'T put other kinds of glass in the blue box, like window glass, light bulbs and oven glassware - they can't be recycled in the same way as bottles and jars. You can put them in your wheeled bin, or take them to you local Household Waste Recycling Centre. Take the usual precautions when handling broken glass.

You need to

Make sure your box is placed at the kerbside before 7:00am on the morning of collection. Make sure you don't block the pavement with your box.

Flats

Flats will not be given a blue box, but this doesn't mean residents can't take part in the kerbside recycling scheme. Instead they will be given a blue multi-material recycling bag which can be placed at the kerbside on the their day of collection before 7:00am.

Size of your blue box

The box is 30cm high, 40cm in depth and 50cm wide and can be stored inside or outside your home.
