Regionally Important Geological Sites

Regionally Important Geological Sites are a local planning designation recognising the geological conservation interest of a site. These sites contribute to local and national geodiversity and biodiversity targets and contribute to the local character and distinctiveness of an area. Regionally Important Geological Sites in Rotherham were first endorsed in a meeting of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council on the 8 November 1999.

As a result of Rotherham Regionally Important Geological Sites selection and boundary update work (NB first web issue 4th July 2011) the Regionally Important Geological Sites Series in Rotherham has been revised.

The Regionally Important Geological Sites Series will contribute towards the environmental evidence base of the Local Development Framework. These designations have been subject to public consultation through the Local Development Framework, Sites and Policies Issues and Options DPD. The Regionally Important Geological Sites Series are also displayed on the Council's website Online Application for Mapping.

Please note there are no additional rights of public access given to Regionally Important Geological Sites, and many sites are located on private land. If in any doubt the Regionally Important Geological Sites landowners and land managers should be identified and a request made prior to any access being made.
