Clinical Waste

We provide a confidential service for the collection and disposal of clinical waste. The service is available free of charge from domestic premises.

Clinical waste is defined as any potentially infected waste which might be a hazard to anyone who accidentally comes into contact with it.

Examples of clinical waste include:

    • Swabs and dressings used for treatment of patients at home on a regular basis.
    • Dialysis waste
    • Drug and pharmaceutical products.
    • Used syringes and needles (sharps) or other sharp instruments.
    • Blood or bodily fluids.

This service is not generally intended for the collection of nappies or incontinence wear, sanitary wear or disposable bedding all this kind of waste can be disposed of in your black bin. If you are having problems with this type of service please call so an individual personel assessment can be arranged.

Clinical waste is collected in tied orange/tiger stripe sacks or a yellow sharp box provided.

How do I arrange for clinical waste to be collected?

If you feel that you may qualify for a clinical waste collection service, then in the first instance you must be assessed by your doctor, nurse, clinic or hospital to ensure the correct service is identified.

The PCT will contact Waste Management once the assessment is completed, and we will then set up your clinical waste collection service.

      Collection

Most households who produce clinical waste have a regular collection. However if a clinical waste collection is needed less frequently it can be arranged.

Clinical waste is usually collected from somewhere in the garden, or at the front of the property.

Any bags or boxes of clinical waste must be left out for collection by 7am on the day of collection.

The sack should not be overfilled and must be securely tied.

Please let us know promptly if you need to change any arrangement, e.g.:

      • You are going away for a period of time.
      • You no longer need a collection.
