What is the Waste Management Service?
Waste management is a statutory function of the Council. The service ensures safe and proper collection, recycling and disposal of domestic waste.
The Waste Management Unit provides a range of services to help residents manage their waste in a way that reduces its long term impact on the environment. Services include:
- The kerbside collection of glass, cans and textiles using a blue box.
- The collection of paper using a blue bag.
- The collection of green waste using a green bin.
The remaining waste from black bins in homes is sent to landfill sites within the sub-region.
A bulky item collection service for the removal of larger items of domestic waste is available. Where residents wish to dispose of larger domestic waste items, these can be taken to one of the four Household Waste Recycling Centres in the borough. These are situated at Car Hill, Greasbrough, Warren Vale, Rawmarsh, Common Road, North Anston and Lidget Lane, Ravenfield.
We compliment our kerbside recycling services with 55 Bring Sites where residents can recycle a range of materials.
For business commercial waste, the Council offers a service on a request basis. This is a service for which a charge may be made.
The nature of Waste Management is changing. The Council has strict limits for the amount of biodegradable waste that can be sent to landfill. This means that the way residents manage their waste needs to change and the way the Council collects your waste will have to change. We cannot continue to take all of your waste to landfill.
The Council is working on how waste services will be provided in the future and what facilities are needed to process domestic waste to significantly reduce the amount that is sent to landfill sites.
What you should expect from us
- A regular collection of your household waste.
- Appointments made to collect bulky items of waste from households within 9 working days of receiving payment.
- Commercial waste collection service on request.
- A regular collection of your blue waste paper bag.
- A regular collection of your multi-material blue box.
- A regular collection of your green waste.
- Household Waste Recycling Centres and Bring Sites.
- Help with each bin, bag or box collection where approved.
- Replace damaged or stolen bins within 7 working days.
- We will collect waste containers left out by 7:00 am on your scheduled collection day. If you do so and we fail to empty it, we will correct this within one working day.
- Waste treated in accordance with the law and with consideration to the environment and our customers.
- A commitment to recycle more and use landfill less.
We will be courteous, helpful and polite at all times.
What we ask of you
- Waste and recycling containers to be made available for collection by 7.00 am on the scheduled collection day.
- Please be considerate when parking. Vehicles blocking access make refuse collection difficult.
- As soon as possible after collection, please return your container to your property.
- Please do not overfill your container. Keep the lid closed (where fitted) and only use the container for the correct materials.
- Please separate your waste and use the recycling containers.
- Please do not overfill your container, or put in heavy objects such as rubble or soil.
- Please ensure access is available for the collection of bulky items on the appointed day.
- Make use of the recycling banks sited in your area.
- Please leave your clinical waste at a suitable collection point.
