Volunteer completes 500 hours

Matthew Asbridge is a well recognised face at the Herringthorpe Stadium and at Rotherham Leisure Complex, not only for his dedication to his own endurance running but for his volunteering. Matthew only began running a few years ago, when he joined Rotherham Harriers. Matthew has cerebral palsy, but competes regularly against able bodied athletes.
On Wednesday 23rd February 2011, Matthew completed an impressive 500 hours of volunteering as part of the Rotherham Sports Volunteer Scheme run by the RMBC Sports Development team.
Matthew began his volunteering with a disability session called Rockets Ability in November 2009. He then went onto sign up to the RSVP Coaching Scholarship Scheme, where he gained a UK Athletics Level 1 coaching qualification.
As an outstanding athlete himself, Matthew understands the required role of a coach and is very dedicated to supporting all the athletes and other coaches he works with. Matthew's continued support throughout the years on all Sports Development programmes is very much appreciated, and highly commended by the team, coaches, parents and other volunteers.

Volunteer Management Programme through Voluntary Action Rotherham
In partnership with the Sports Development team the volunteer centre at Voluntary Action Rotherham are keen to forge closer links with Sports Clubs and groups in a bid to provide more volunteering opportunities and promote best practice in terms of volunteer management.
Voluntary Action Rotherham and the Volunteer Centre currently has 190 organisations registered to use volunteers in some capacity. However, at present we have a limited number of sports organisations registered, in spite of this being a popular area requested by lots of potential volunteers.
If you use volunteers or would like to use volunteers in the future and would like to find out more visit the VAR website and follow the link from 'Support for Volunteer Managers' on the home page or contact Alsion Thorpe direct on 01709 834462.
At the present time we have a FREE Toolkit which we can issue to organisations that register with us. The Toolkit is a unique resource which will prove invaluable to anyone who manages volunteers, whether you are new to the role or have been doing it for years.
Please note that in order for the Volunteer Centre to support you with volunteers you will need to be a member of VAR (FREE) and to be registered with the Volunteer Centre (FREE). Please see the Benefits of registration form and the Volunteer centre membership registration pack. To register you will also be required to complete the VAR Membership form.
If you need support to complete the required forms please contact Alison Thorpe on the above number or return the completed forms to alison.thorp@varotherham.org.uk
