Young Person in Higher Education

Young people choosing to go to University to complete a degree will be expected to access all funding options available to them via traditional funding bodies.

In addition RMBC has financial support up to £11000 for the duration of the course available to young people.

This is the total amount available to young people accessing higher education.

The young person, with their Personal Advisor are able to determine how with their loans and any other costs how this money is they split up over the duration of the degree.

It is however expected this grant should include consideration for:

  • paying accommodation
  • day to day costs such as food, travel
  • any equipment costs

There is no extension to this amount. Should the young person end their programme of study before the end of the course they will not be expected to pay this support back to RMBC.

No young person will be provided with the full amount as a lump sum at the start of their studies.

Any access to remaining monies will require evidence that the young person has passed that year of study.

If the young person is remaining in their staying put placement – young person will be expected to continue to pay equivalent HB rate for that accommodation from their loans/grant from Leaving Care. The Leaving Care Service would continue to pay the staying put carer the staying put rate minus the HB agreed rate.
