Rotherham Council Buys Law CourtsPublished Friday, 31st March 2017
Rotherham Council has officially taken ownership of the former Rotherham Magistrates Court building - bringing the Council another step closer in its plans to regenerate the town centre.
The building was transferred from Her Majesty’s Court & Tribunal Service (HMCTS) this week.
Rotherham Council’s Strategic Director of Regeneration and Environment Damien Wilson said: "The whole area around Forge Island is a key site in our plans to regenerate the town centre as part of our masterplan so this is another significant step in making these plans become a reality.
"We already have several developers interested in Forge Island and this purchase will significantly aid our plans, bringing added benefits to the town centre masterplan. The site could play a number of different roles through redevelopment and has the potential to accommodate several alternative, complementary activities.”
The agreement follows the recent purchase of Forge Island from Tesco. The old Tesco building is currently in the process of being demolished to prepare it for development. Detailed proposals for the island are being prepared alongside the town centre masterplan. An initial draft of the plan will be published this month (April 2017).
