Jump on board to free digital skillsPublished Thursday, 23rd November 2017
People and businesses in Rotherham can learn about getting online and boost their digital skills for free as Google brings its Digital Garage Bus to Riverside House on Monday 4 December.
The Digital Garage Bus is a place where anyone can come and learn free digital skills to grow their business, learn more about the internet, or develop new vocational skills, which can help boost confidence, develop career skills or help start a new business.
In the last two years, over 200,000 people across the UK have benefitted from Google’s free face to face training on digital know-how. The project first launched in South Yorkshire with the Digital Garage on Sheffield’s High Street, but has taken to the streets to reach more people across the region.
Three courses will be available on the day: First Steps Online is ideal for absolute beginners who feel like they need a helping hand in getting online or using technology for the first time, from turning on a computer, to setting up an email account and using search engines.
Businesses can take advantage of the Introduction to Digital Advertising course to learn about search, social and display advertising and how to get started with advertising a business.
During the Stay Safe Online session visitors will learn about cyber-safety basics and discover some simple steps to stay safe online.
Visitors can also drop-in throughout the day for free general advice and information and can stay for as little or as long as they like.
Cllr Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council said: “The Google Digital Garage Bus visiting Rotherham is a fantastic opportunity for residents to gain new skills and knowledge, whether they’re just starting out online or want to make sure they and their family are safe online. It’s also a great benefit for local businesses to see how they can reach more customers and increase their business potential.
“The Council is pleased to be able to offer this training in partnership with a world-renowned organisation, making sure residents and businesses get relevant, top advice.”
Alice Mansergh, Director of Google Marketing Solutions for UK and Ireland, added: “Google's products and free digital training are a growth engine for people and businesses up and down the country. So if you live in the South Yorkshire region and you want to boost your career, or turbocharge your business, please join us at our Digital Garage bus and talk to our experts. We can help you connect to new customers, help boost your productivity or improve your employability no matter what field you work in.”
The bus will be situated outside Riverside House, Main Street, Rotherham, S60 1AE.
First Steps Online will take place at 10 am, followed by Introduction to Advertising at 12 noon, and Stay Safe Online at 2 pm.
To guarantee your place on a session, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Sessions are limited to 20 places on a first come, first served basis. Or drop-in between 10 am and 4 pm for general advice and information.
The Google Digital Garage Bus will also be available for advice and coaching for local small business on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 December. For more information and to book on an afternoon ‘workshop’ session, contact the Google Digital Garage in Sheffield or drop in at the bus during the mornings.
