Have lots of festive family fun at various events around Rotherham

Rotherham residents are in for a treat with lots of family fun during the festive season at various Christmas themed events taking place around the borough.

The annual Thrybergh Country Park Christmas Fayre returns on Friday 1 December from 3.30pm to 9.00pm with a magical after dark experience. See Father Christmas open the event at 3.30pm and switch on the Christmas tree lights.

The Fayre continues on Saturday 2 December from 11.00am to 4.00pm. See the exciting arrival of Father Christmas on his speedboat at 11.00am; then visit Santa in his Grotto for £3.00 per child, which includes a gift. There will also be market stalls, face painting, festive food and drink, live music, Christmas craft-making, rides and festive games for all the family.

On Saturday 2 December All Saints’ Square will host Festive Wonderland, a free event for the whole family from 10.30am to 3.30pm and little ones again have the chance to meet Father Christmas in his Grotto.

Look out for two mischievous elves as they entertain visitors while creating amazing balloon sculptures. Have lots of family fun with Christmas craft-making activities and face painting. Attractions include an inflatable snow globe, find out if you’ve been naughty or nice on the “Goodometer” and experience a white Christmas with a sprinkling of snow! Visits to see Father Christmas are £3.00 per child (including gift), tickets are still available from Rotherham Visitor Centre.

On Saturday 9 December, Rotherham town centre steps back in time for “A Victorian Christmas” with a day of free traditional entertainment and activities from 10.30am until 3.30pm.

Seasonal entertainment will be provided by Great Alakazam’s Victorian Varieties, the Victorian dancers and hilarious carol-singing walkabout characters Dizzy and Dotty. Meet Professor Warf and Miss Weft the Victorian Time Travellers and enjoy a virtuoso strolling music performance from the Dickensian Ding Dong.

Get some great ideas for Christmas gifts at the extensive market on Effingham Street selling an eclectic mix of goods. Have a taste of free mulled wine and take part in craft-making workshops.

There is something for everyone at this event - and as an added bonus, the historic Chapel on the Bridge will also be open from 10.30am until 2.30pm.

On Saturday 16 December, the Magical Reindeer Experience brings Christmas spirit to Rotherham town centre. Meet the real reindeer and Father Christmas at this magical family event and The Maniax hilarious street theatre act will bring lots of festive silliness to the proceedings! Led by the City of Sheffield Pipe Band, the parade sets off at 12.45pm, travelling around the town before entering a viewing area outside Boots until 3.00pm. Thorpe Hesley Brass Band will provide lots of wonderful Christmas sounds.

Father Christmas and his little helpers will be visiting Riverside Library to tell Christmas stories and give out gifts to lucky boys and girls, on Tuesday 19 December from 4.00pm to 5.00pm and Thursday 21 December from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. The event costs £2.50 per child. Places are limited and must be booked in advance. Please call into Riverside Library to book. Payment must be made at the time of booking.

Rotherham shoppers can once again benefit from FREE parking on Saturdays and Sundays in all council-run on-street bays and off-street car parks in the run up to Christmas (as well as free parking every Sunday as normal).

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott, is keen to encourage children and families to go along and join in the festive fun. She said: “These delightful seasonal events and activities are specially planned around the borough to get everyone into the Christmas spirit.

“Visitors will be filled with cheer from the festive themed family entertainment. They can also do their Christmas shopping at a variety of independent businesses and markets whilst in the town centre. Shoppers can also use free weekend parking in the run up to Christmas and New Year too.”
