All change for buses in RotherhamPublished Thursday, 26th April 2018
Bus services will operate from Forge Island Temporary Bus Station and Corporation Street from Sunday 29 April as Rotherham Interchange closes for a £12 million refurbishment.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is reminding customers that the last bus will leave Rotherham Interchange soon before midnight on Saturday before it closes for a year-long upgrade and services move to the temporary site.
“We’re aware that the closure will affect customers and that’s why we’ve built a temporary facility at Forge Island, around 300 metres away from the interchange itself, to accommodate bus services and minimise disruption”, says Tim Taylor, Director of Customer Services at SYPTE.
“We’ll be doing everything we can to make sure passengers are kept well informed about where to get their services from. Information is already available online and at the interchange itself. Interchange staff will be onsite ready to help with queries and customers can contact Traveline through Twitter or by giving them a call.”
From Sunday 29 April most bus services that would normally operate from the interchange will be transferred to Forge Island. There will be 12 bus stands with lighting, seating and a covered waiting area for passengers available, along with timetables at each stand, a Passenger Information Display (PID), CCTV and a staffed customer service desk.
Additional temporary stops and shelters have been added on Corporation Street, for the remainder of the services.
Having a temporary bus station means the building contractors will be able to work intensively on the interchange. The project is due to be delivered by Spring 2019.
Refurbishment works on the Interchange were needed since the bus fire in May 2016 and will include improved lighting, glazing, seating and PIDs, plus new floors and an improved CCTV system. The car park will benefit from new surfacing, bigger spaces for modern cars, designated walking routes and new cladding.
While the works take place, the interchange and car park will be closed, but the café, shops in the mall and customer toilets will remain open. A cash and card ticket machine will be available at Rotherham Interchange, and customers will be able to use a card only ticket machine at Forge Island bus station.
