Charity cheque presentationPublished Friday, 4th July 2014
Building control officers from across South Yorkshire and the Humber swapped their inspection routines last month to raise money for one very special building!
They presented PACT - the Parents' Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia - with a cheque for £1,500, which will help families with children who have been diagnosed with cancer.
Founded in 1977, PACT is a Sheffield charity that provides practical and emotional support for children and their families throughout their contact with the oncology unit at the Sheffield Children's Hospital at Western Bank.
The charity gives families a welcome opportunity for a holiday break and some quality family time thanks to the two caravans it owns in Filey and Berwick-on-Tweed and PACT House, a large five-bedroom house located close to Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
The house helps families who would normally have to travel a long distance daily to the hospital. It has also has gone a long way to helping many families by providing a welcome respite from the stress of hospital.
Lee Rourke, a Principal Building Control Officer for Rotherham Council's Building Control department, nominated PACT as the sponsored charity for this year's South Yorkshire and Humber Building Excellence Awards.
The nomination was a very personal one as Lee’s 13-year old daughter, Jemima was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2007.
"PACT gave our family invaluable support both during the three years of treatment that she went through," Lee said. "The charity was absolutely wonderful at a very stressful time in our lives and continued to provide support once the treatment had been successfully completed."
The money was raised from a charity raffle at this year's Building Excellence Awards event organised by building control departments of councils across Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, North Lincolnshire, North-East Lincolnshire and Hull. After such a successful event the group are looking forward to sponsoring PACT again in the 2015 Building Excellence Awards.
