New Floodlights at Herringthorpe Valley Park
Published Thursday 5th August 10
Good news for children and young people across the borough who are being invited to celebrate the installation of the new floodlights at Herringthorpe Valley Park by taking part in free multi-sport sessions.
The new floodlights, which have been funded by the Safer Rotherham Partnership, will help children and young people feel safe whilst enjoying sports in the park for longer.
To celebrate, Rotherham MBC's Green Spaces Team have organised a special launch event of the floodlights at Herringthorpe Valley Park on 11 August between 6 - 9pm at the Multi-use Games Area.
There will be the opportunity to take part in fun activities and win some fantastic prizes. Local youth bands from Herringthorpe Youth Centre will also be on hand to provide entertainment.
Green Spaces Officer, Elesha Smith said "This is as fantastic addition to the park which will mean we can put on more events as we head into winter and the darker nights approach.
"The floodlights are part of a number of improvements made to Herringthorpe Valley Park in the last few years. Rotherham MBC's Green Spaces team and Friends of Valley Park have worked together to introduce many facilities including the introduction of an innovative multi-use games area.
"The installation of the new floodlights will allow Rotherham children and young people to enjoy the games area for longer."
Joint Chair of the Safer Rotherham Partnership and Strategic Director of Neighbourhoods and Adult Services, Tom Cray said: "The Safer Rotherham Partnership welcomes initiatives which encourage young people to take part in sport.
"The installation of the lighting will enhance an already well used facility ensuring it can be used safely for longer."
To make the most of the new floodlights, Rotherham MBC Sports Development Coaches will be holding free weekly multi-sports sessions. Starting on Monday 16 August, the sessions will run from 6.30 - 8pm and include a variety of fun sports activities including football, cricket, basketball, dance, tag rugby, rounders and many more.
Elesha Smith added: "There is something for everyone to enjoy. Sessions are open to anyone aged between 8 -24 years old, there's no need to book and no cost involved."
