Rotherham is welcoming a new school this month with the opening of Lilly Hall Primary in Maltby.

The new school is able to accommodate 420 pupils, a foundation unit of 26 children and comprises of two Foundation Units, four Key Stage One classrooms, hall, reception, offices, staff room and ancillary rooms.

The project, which took 18 months to complete, involved the creation of an extension to accommodate Key Stage One pupils, from Maltby Hall Infants, on the amalgamated Maltby Lilly Hall Juniors site to form Maltby Lilly Hall Primary.

The total cost of the project was £4 million which was funded through the Primary Capital Programme.

A new pedestrian site entrance was formed, off Lilly Hall Road, with meandering woodland walk pathway leading to the new main entrance reception.

The external appearance of the building was designed to blend modern white render with more rustic brickwork and slate.

The building itself benefits from high levels of thermal insulation, solar panels, underfloor heating and natural ventilation. It sits within a landscaped perimeter incorporating feature trees and shrubs as well as metalwork canopies (incorporating pupil design work) and bench seating.

The Foundation Stages also feature a self-contained play area, fully surrounded by an acoustic fence, to shield neighbouring properties from excesses in noise.

To complete the scheme, and tie old with new, the existing building underwent a complete make-over including updated fixed furniture, re-roofing, new kitchen, floor finishes and decoration.

Externally, the main entranced doors were replaced and feature cladding incorporated to update the facades.

Cabinet Member for Children and Education Services, Councillor Christine Beaumont, said: "This new school is a fantastic facility and I have little doubt that it’ll produce wonderful pupils who will benefit incredibly from such an innovative environment.

"It’s great to see that schools are becoming so progressive, as well as environmentally friendly, it really leads by example and encourages our youngest residents to follow suit.

"Lilly Hall Primary is really leading by example in terms of the way its transforming the way children learn and the school is a wonderful sight to see. Congratulations to everyone involved."
