Rotherham's GCSE record breakers

Rotherham students have again broken records with another rise in exam grades at GCSE.
A total of 3588 students took GCSEs this year and 73.8% got 5 A*- C grades, up 6% on last year.
The figure for 5A*- C including English and Maths in Rotherham also rose by 3.8% to 51.4%.
In 2007, the 5A*-C figure in Rotherham was just 55.3% and the figure including English and Maths stood at 39.8%.
Among the individual gains over 10% from schools were (first figure is 5A*-C, second is the figure including English and Maths):
- Thrybergh - up 33.9% to 81.9%, up 19% to 44%
- Clifton - up 15% to 65%, up 4% to 33%
- Wath - up 12.8% to 83%, up 0.8% to 55%
- St Pius - up 7.3% to 70.3%, up 12.2% to 53.9%
- Aston - up 3% to 79%, up 15% to 68%
In addition, the highest performing school in Rotherham at 5A*-C was St Bernards with a rate of 89% (up 2.8% on last year), while Aston hit the top for 5A*-C including English and Maths at 68%.
Councillor Paul Lakin, Cabinet Member for Safeguarding and Developing Learning Opportunities for Children, said: "These are another amazing set of GCSE results and huge credit must go to all the students and everyone who has supported them through their studies.
"When you put this together with last week's A-Level figures it is clear that Rotherham schools are preparing students for the future by making sure they have a high quality education."
