Published Tuesday 24th August 10

One of Clifton Park Museum’s most well know pieces, “The Sentry”, is to go on loan to Museums Sheffield and Norwich Castle Museum to feature as part of a new exciting exhibition.

The Sentry, a World War 1 bronze maquette by local sculptor Charles Sargent Jagger, will feature in the exhibition "Restless Times; Art in Britain 1914-45".

The collection will use British art to explore the turbulent but creative years during wartime Britain by investigating the spirit of change, uncertainty and cultural exchanges during this period.

The sculpture by Kilnhurst born Jagger will be in very good company as the exhibition will also include significant loans from other collections including Tate Britain.

Cultural Services Manager for Rotherham Council, Elenore Fisher, said: "It's a great honour for the Museum to have had such a high profile request.

"The maquette has been well loved by many visitors to the Museum and it's good to know that one of Rotherham 's treasures will be appreciated outside the local area."

The Sentry has already proved to be a popular piece and has recently featured in the BBC initiative "History of the world in 100 objects".

Created in 1921 the World War 1 solider was a trial version for the memorial at The Britannia Hotel in Manchester . Jagger used his own experience during the war and his ability as a sculptor to create a number of high profile memorials including the famous Royal Artillery Memorial in Hyde Park in London .

The maquette will form part of the "Experiences of War" section of the exhibition which will focus on the groups who documented and memorialised the experiences of being at war.

Elenore concluded: "The piece will make a fantastic addition to the exhibition. It's great to see one of Rotherham 's many treasures bringing enjoyment to so many people."

The collection will be available to view at the Millennium Gallery, Museums Sheffield, from October 6 until January 30 2011 and at the Norwich Castle Museum from February 19 until April 24 2011 .
