Support World Mental Health Day with a trip to the gallery

Published Wednesday 29th September 10

Rotherham is set to mark World Mental Health Day by hosting an exciting exhibition of artwork by local people with mental health issues.

ARTiculate is a two week long event, running from Monday 4 to Saturday 16 October and will be taking place in the atrium space in the newly refurbished Imperial Buildings.

Members of the public are also invited to attend on Monday 4 at 11am, when the exhibition will be officially opened by the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Rose McNeely, followed by refreshments and nibbles.

All the work displayed have been created by local Rotherham people, many of whom attend local support groups. Those organisations submitting work to the exhibition include Aspen Lodge, Clifton Court , Rotherham Mind and Dinnington Old Library.

Rotherham Community Arts Service (Arts in Health) have worked closely with a number of these groups on special projects in the past and continue to run extremely popular workshops including visual arts, African drumming and creative writing.

Arts in Health Officer, Rhiannon Lister-Coburn said: "With so many people affected by mental health it's important to mark World Mental Health day, and what better way than with an art exhibition."

Studies have shown that producing art can have a significant beneficial effect on a person's mental health by reducing anxiety, depression and lowering blood pressure.

Rhiannon continued: "The artists have really benefited from working on their projects and some great pieces have been produced which the local community will now get to enjoy too."

The exhibition will be open from 10am to 4pm daily in the Imperial Buildings, Corporation Street . Admission is free.
