Car park closures

Published Wednesday 27th October 10

Two unused car parks in Rotherham will close this week.

From Tuesday October 26, both the Cottenham Road East car park on Fitzwilliam Road at Eastwood and the car park at Greasbrough Road, Parkgate, will close.

Rotherham Borough Council made the decision after hearing that both sites are surplus to operational requirements.

The Cottenham Road East site has 104 spaces and is virtually never used - being too far from the Town Centre to attract commuters or shoppers.

Only £23.80 has been raised in revenue during the first six months of this year compared to the £3.714.25 paid by the authority in business rates plus the £295 payable each year for the machine maintenance costs.

Vacant spaces also exist on the neighbouring Cottenham Road West and York Road sites, both on Fitzwilliam Road.

The Greasbrough Road car park at Parkgate has 44 spaces and is rarely used - apart from being a location for regular anti-social behaviour, such as drug abuse. The authority receives no income from this particular site but £1,366.20 has to be paid by the authority in business rates.

Both sites will now be placed in the authority's land and property bank.
