Illegal parking crack-down across Rotherham's town centres

Published Monday 22nd November 10

Renegade motorists who park illegally in disabled parking spaces across towns in Rotherham are being warned they face prosecution.

From next Monday, November 29, specific car parks across the borough are to be targeted by parking wardens following complaints from blue badge holders.

Any vehicle which is found to be committing any of the following offences will be issued with an enforcement notice:

  • parked in a disabled bay without displaying a valid blue badge
  • parked outside the bay markings
  • parked on yellow lines or hatched areas
  • parked in such a way to cause an obstruction

The enforcement crack-down will be aimed specifically at the car parks in the following locations:

  • Wath Library
  • Montgomery Hall, Wath
  • Warehouse Lane, Wath
  • Queen Street, Swinton
  • Church Street, Swinton
  • Constable Lane, Dinnington

Cllr Richard Russell, Town Centre Cabinet Member for Rotherham Borough Council, said: "The crack-down in these specific car parks is a direct result of the complaints the Parking Services Unit has received from motorists with genuine disabilities. They have found they regularly have problems parking at these particular locations because of the unauthorised use of disabled bays by other motorists."

"Blue badges are issued for a very good reason. They remove some of the stress of travel from people, who otherwise potentially would not leave their homes, and the parking spaces themselves cater especially for wheelchair access and extra wide door opening."

He added that warning signs are being installed at the car parks but parking attendants will be take action if they find a vehicle parked illegally.
