Real Reindeer return to Rotherham this Saturday
Published Wednesday 8th December 10
Santa has given his reindeer the day off so they can visit the boys and girls (and grown-ups) of Rotherham in one of the most popular events of the year.
The Real Reindeer, which in the past caused a flurry of excitement when they appeared in the borough, will be touring the town centre on Saturday December 11 from 12.45pm, before settling in All Saints' Square until 3pm to meet all the children who they will be delivering presents to.
To complete the day, Santa will be in his grotto and there will be traditional musical entertainment throughout the day supplied by Rotherham Schools' Music Service at 11am and Thorpe Hesley Brass Band from 2pm.
The following Thursday (December 16), there will be a very special "Winter Lantern Parade", starting from Rotherham Minster at 6pm.
Year 4 children from Canklow Woods Primary School and Bramley Grange Primary will be taking part in the parade with their festive, hand-made lanterns, joined by the Thorpe Hesley Brass Band and a choir from the minster.
Whilst on their tour they will be singing Christmas carols and are inviting town centre visitors to join them.
Directly following the parade, the kids from Bramley Grange will be performing the nativity in the Minster.
Rotherham MBC Events and Promotions Manager, Marie Hayes, said: "We're continuing the theme of a traditional Christmas in Rotherham town centre with these wonderful festive events. They'll complement the fantastic illuminations perfectly.
"The reindeer are always incredibly popular and give children and adults alike the opportunity to get close to these magical and friendly animals. It's great to have them back."
Shops in the town centre will be opening late each Thursday and there will be free parking all day on each Saturday in council-run car parks and all on-street parking bays.
To save money this Christmas, you can sign up for a free town centre "Shop Local" card and whilst in town enjoying the events save money on eating out, looking good or getting pampered.
Over 90 businesses are currently taking part. Just visit www.rotherhamtowncentre.co.uk to register for your card and see the offers or visit the Visitor Centre in All Saints' Square.
