'Untold Stories' of Holocaust Memorial Day in Rotherham
Published Monday 24th January 11
'Untold Stories' of genocide will be recounted at a special event in Rotherham to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.
From 6.30 to 7.30 pm on Thursday, January 27, members of the Rotherham Youth Cabinet will be holding a special service at Rotherham Town Hall when stories from both the Holocaust and other horrendous acts of genocide will be recounted.
Cllr Rose McNeely, the Mayor of Rotherham, will officially open the event and Cllr Mahroof Hussain, Cabinet Member for Community Development, Equality and Young Peoples Issues, will also take part, as will Liam Laughton, a former member of the Rotherham Youth Cabinet.
The event is open to anyone and will also give the public the opportunity to sign the Rotherham Book of Remembrance as a mark of respect and remembrance for those who not only died or were persecuted during World War II but also those who have been affected by more recent atrocities.
The book will then be available for signing at the Rotherham Visitor Centre in All Saints Square until Friday, February 4.
This is the 11th annual Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK and this year the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is challenging everyone to ensure that the 'Untold Stories' from the past are never lost or forgotten.
This year's theme is based on the fact that millions of individual stories will obviously never be known, but of the ones that are told they should be listened to, learned from and recounted to others so today's population can learn the lessons of the past.
We all have the power to play a part in the lives and words that are remembered, it is everyone's role to ensure that the 'Untold Stories' from the past do not get lost. On HMD 2011, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is asking everyone to tell these stories that enable us to learn from history, from the real stories of those who are no longer with us in order to create a safer, better future.
