Spine-chilling show set for Rotherham Theatres
Published Friday 4th February 11
Halloween may be long gone, but, for those in need of spine-chilling thrills, Rotherham Theatres will be delivering a show worthy of deepest, darkest October.
The Cotton Grass Theatre Company will be presenting "Haunted" at Rotherham Arts Centre on Wednesday February 16, for an evening of ghosts and apparitions conjured from the stories of M.R. James, dramatised by Christopher Hawes.
Famed for their atmosphere, James's ghost stories are never shocking in a "horror movie" way and there is rarely even any blood. But, he plays, most skilfully, on the unconscious anxieties we all share, most particularly, our fear of death.
In the play two friends, one of whom is M R James himself, come together in an unspecified place and begin to tell stories. Each story contains others and, slowly, the true plot unravels.
Each act contains two stories. The first centres around the famous tale of "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad" in which a lonely and repressed academic confronts his worst nightmares. The second act recounts "Lost Hearts" a tale of two murdered children, whose perturbed spirits cannot rest.
"Haunted" will be performed at Rotherham Arts Centre on Wednesday 16 February at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £9 (concessions £7).
