The Gingerbread Man comes to Rotherham Theatres

Published Wednesday 9th February 11

Third Nail Theatre return to Rotherham’s Civic Theatre with an enduring tale of friendship, overcoming adversity and magic for the entire family.

The acclaimed theatre company will be performing David Wood's "The Gingerbread Man" at Rotherham Civic Theatre from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 February.

It tells the story of a house that comes to life at night. While the "Big Ones" are asleep, plenty of activity is taking place on the kitchen dresser.

Disaster strikes when the cuckoo-clock Cuckoo loses his voice and is threatened with the dustbin in the morning if it doesn't return.

With the help of his good friends, the Salt Cellar, the Pepper Mill, and of course, the Gingerbread Man, he sets out on an adventure to reclaim his lost voice. But, with many obstacles in the way such as an Old Tea Bag, a greedy Mouse and the "Big Ones", the task may not be an easy one.

Created by celebrated writer David Wood, The Gingerbread man has been performed all over the world and had a nine-year run in London.

David began writing as a student at Oxford University in the sixties. He wrote his first play for children in 1967 and has since written over 60 more.

His stage adaptations of well-known books include Dick King-Smith's Babe the Sheep-Pig, a string of Roald Dahl adaptations, including The BFG, The Witches and The Twits, as well as The Prince of Wales' The Old Man Of Lochnagar.

Third Nail Theatre has presented a wide range of critically acclaimed productions at Rotherham Civic Theatre since 1993, as well as regular productions in the community.

Their past family shows have included highly-praised productions of The Jungle Book, The BFG, James and the Giant Peach, The Fantastic Mr Fox and Robin Hood.

The Gingerbread Man follows in the tradition of these great shows by being family friendly, with fantastic musical routines and a perfect running time of 1 hour 40 minutes (including interval), so smaller theatre-lovers won't get restless.

The Gingerbread Man will be performed at Rotherham Civic Theatre between Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 February, 7pm (Wednesday - Friday), 11am and 2pm (Saturday).

Tickets are priced at £7.50, concessions £5.50, family ticket £22, and can be purchased from the Box Office in the Central Library and Arts Centre reception, via the phone on 01709 823621 or online by following the "booking information" link at www.rotherham.gov.uk/theatres.
