Extra resources for Rotherham's roads

Published Wednesday 13th January 10

Councillors have decided that extra resources will be put into an urgent assessment of the condition of the borough’s roads following the exceptionally cold weather conditions recently.

Highways Inspectors are already looking at the main roads and bus routes and instigating emergency repairs to any dangerous defects.  Additional highway repair staff are also being deployed to undertake this work.

As conditions allow, the assessment will be extended onto minor and estate roads.

The inspectors have also identified areas of extensive, localised damage to some road surfaces which will be prioritised over the next few weeks.  As the scale of these repairs becomes known, additional teams will be set up to deal with this work as necessary.

Cllr Roger Stone, the Leader of Rotherham Borough Council, said: "Reports received from the public will also form a useful and important part of this assessment, and enable the Council to get a clearer picture of the damage caused by the extended cold spell.  In turn, this will help set the programme of works designed to prevent a longer term deterioration in the condition of Rotherham's roads."

Any person who is concerned about a potentially hazardous defect in the highway can report it to Rotherham Borough Council by ringing the Rotherham Streetpride number on 01709 336003.
