Best ever GCSE results for Rotherham

Published Wednesday 13th January 10

Rotherham schools enjoyed their best ever results last year (2009) with local students achieving record-breaking grades - making it one of the most improved authorities in the country.

Today's publication of the Department for Children, Schools and Families overview in the Key Stage 4 Achievement and Attainment Tables confirm that 67 per cent of 16 year olds in the Borough achieved at least five A*-C grades and over 47 per cent achieved that distinction including English and Maths.

Both figures are records for Rotherham and represent significant increases of over eight per cent and six per cent respectively on 2008. In comparison, the national increases were 4.75 per cent and 2.2 per cent. A total of 94 per cent  of students passed GCSE in at least five subjects at grades A*-G and 98.5 per cent achieved at least on GCSE qualification, both "best ever" performances.

Overall, Rotherham schools recorded increases in performance which exceeded the national average increases and Rotherham was the 13th most improved Local Authority in the country on the main GCSE measures.

This is the seventh consecutive year of improvement at GCSE in Rotherham and by far the strongest increase to date. Many of the 16 secondary schools achieved their best ever results not only for those students capable of achieving A*- C but across the whole ability range.

Cllr Shaun Wright, the Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Services, described the news as "fantastic".

He said: "Once again my congratulations go to all our students and teachers for these inspiring results. They are not only vitally important for young people and their families and for the future of our borough, but also reflect the huge amount of investment put into schools and the education infrastructure by this authority in recent years.

"This is a long-term plan and I am sure we will see even further improvements in the future."
