Rotherham Libraries host young writing talent
Published Friday 25th March 11
Budding young writers from across South Yorkshire will come together and perform their work in Rotherham next month.
On Tuesday April 5 the free 'spoken word' event, which is open to all ages, will take place at Rotherham's Arts Centre Studio Theatre from 7 to 10 pm.
As well as showcasing work from members of young writers' groups that meet in libraries and community spaces in Rotherham, Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster, there will also be an 'Open Mic' section for anyone, young and old, who gets the urge to have a go. So everyone is invited to take along something to read just in case!
Vicky Morris, who runs Rotherham Young Writers group, said: "Signposts has been running these Open Mic events led by young writers for a few years now and they have been really successful.
"It is great to see that spoken word has become so popular with people of all ages. Our nights are always inspiring, supportive and lots of fun. Some think writing is boring but it underpins everything we love from music to comedy. I urge folk to come along, enjoy the evening with us and support local young talent. Better still have a go yourself!"
The Rotherham Young Writers group, who will be headlining the Spoken Word evening, is aimed at 14 to 19 year olds who like writing. The group meets informally every Monday between 5 and 7pm in Meeting Room 2 at Rotherham Central Library and Arts Centre.
The Group, now in its second year, is a partnership between Rotherham Library Services and Signposts. It covers a wide range of writing forms and offers writing related opportunities such as open mics, publishing and competition opportunities.
Along with members of other South Yorkshire Young Writers' groups, RYW members have recently returned from a week-long writing residential course at the prestigious Arvon Foundation Writing Centre in West Yorkshire.
