Weekend closures for M1 roundabout.

Published Friday 29th July 11

Motorists are being warned of likely traffic delays across the Rotherham area over the coming weekends due to bridge repairs over the M1 motorway.

Drivers are being warned that weekend work to repair a bridge over the M1 near Sheffield will get underway later this month.

The bridge, which carries the A630 from Sheffield to Rotherham over the M1 at the Junction 33 interchange, will be subject to lane closures and 24 hour working for four weekends from Friday, July 29, 2011.

The works, which will include renewal of the deck waterproofing, surfacing and expansion joints, are expected to be completed by Monday, August 22, and will involve weekend working only from 10pm on Friday nights until 6am on Monday mornings, weather permitting.

Access through the roundabout will be maintained at all times and a reduced 30mph speed limit will be in place throughout the works. Some delays are expected due to the lane closures.

In addition, there will be lane closures on a short section of the A630 Sheffield Parkway on the north-east approach to the junction. The hard shoulders on the north and southbound exit slip roads, and on the southbound entry slip road, will also be closed.

Highways Agency Project Manager Tim Calvert said: "The surface of the bridge has required regular repairs in recent times causing inconvenience to users of the junction.

"Replacing the ageing waterproofing and re-surfacing the bridge will extend the life of the bridge and end the need for running repairs - restoring the reliability of journeys for users of local roads and the motorway network around this part of South Yorkshire.

"We have timed this work so it takes place at the weekend when traffic flows are lower. However, it is busy at this junction between noon and 2pm on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and we want drivers to be aware that this work is taking place and to plan their journeys accordingly as there are likely to be occasional queues along the A630 Sheffield Parkway approach onto the roundabout at these times."
