Mushroom Roundabout gets the green light
Published Wednesday 10th August 11
Work to improve one of Rotherham’s key junctions is coming to a conclusion.
The Mushroom Roundabout in Dalton, is set to be controlled by traffic light for the first time on Thursday August 18.
The year-long project, which was jointly-funded by Rotherham Borough Council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, is set to improve traffic flow, relieve congestion, reduce pollution and ensure pedestrians safety,
The successful work will now mean a reduction of the congestion that regularly occurs at this busy junction and improve the reliability of bus journey times.
Pedestrian crossings have been constructed on all four approach / exit arms of the roundabout, which is located between Fitzwilliam Road, Aldwarke Lane and Doncaster Road, providing access all around the junction without the need to use subways.
Additionally, the crossings can be used by cyclists and will link into purpose built shared footway / cycleways around the roundabout
Cabinet Member for Town Centres, Economic Growth and prosperity, Cllr. Gerald Smith, said: "Motorists, bus operators and community groups have been seeking improvements at this junction for some time and it is hoped this scheme will meet these demands.
"The roundabout will now be a safer and cleaner corner of Rotherham, as well as making this route more convenient for thousands of motorists.
"I'd like to congratulate everyone involved from both Rotherham Borough Council, the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and bus operators for their effective partnership working to deliver these improvements."
