It’s Showtime in Rotherham
Published Wednesday 7th September 11
The wait is over, the largest free show in the north of England, the Rotherham Show, returns this weekend to the beautiful surrounds of Clifton Park.
The show, which is organised by Rotherham Borough Council's Marketing and Events team, will include favourites such as the Vintage Vehicle Rally, Horticultural Show, the Main Arena and the Rotherham Diversity Festival.
The always-popular Vintage Vehicle Rally, which this year will include over 100 cars as well as a wealth of two-wheeled wonders, will give visitors a close look at vehicles ranging from a 1927 H. H. Franklin, to a 1974 Jensen Healey.
The Vintage Vehicles tour of the borough will once again be bringing automotive dreams to Rotherham as the crowd-puller tours the town, with the Mayor's car, ET1, leading the parade.
The rally, which will include all vehicles exhibiting on Sunday, will be starting at Drummond Street car park at 10.30am, then via Effingham Street, touring past Parkgate, into Rawmarsh via Warren Vale, around the streets then down Haugh Road towards Nether Haugh and Greasbrough before heading back down Centenary Way to Whiston Crossroads, finishing in Clifton Park Museum car park.
The Main Arena, hosted by Rother FM, will once again bring a wealth of action to the showground, including hilarious prehistoric capers with the Pre Hee Men and their Cavemen Car, the ever popular Phoenix Falconry Flying display and the Nottinghamshire Police Pipe Band.
It will be music to the ears all weekend, with Saturday's Folk Festival bringing together some of the finest talent on the international, national and local scene including Ray Hearne, Vicky Swann and Jonny Dyer, Kasai Masai and Monkey's Orphan.
To continue the musical theme, Redroad FM will be on the bandstand, bringing live from local bands to visitors.
Sunday's treat will be a day of Jazz which will kick off with The Colin Yates Big Band, followed by The Swing Commanders and closed with the ever popular Dave Brennan's Jubilee Jazz Band.
For those who prefer the sound of the classic brass bands, Whiston, Maltby Miners' Welfare, Thurcroft Welfare and Dinnington Colliery will be performing at the bandstand from 12 noon.
There is also all the fun of the fair to be had, as well as fierce competition at the Horticultural Show, which will be welcoming hundreds of people as they enter their home-grown wonders, as well as their craft masterpieces, to compete for trophies and to show off the best the borough has to offer.
In the Rotherham Diversity Festival, there will be something taking place around every corner, including crafts, arts, workshops and live performances.
Everyone is invited to try their hand at something new, from "Rock and Dohl" to turning junk into a musical instrument. Local favourite Steph Little will also be performing during the day.
Leader of the Council, Roger Stone, said: "We want to make sure Rotherham has an event to be proud of, which families know they can come to, not have to spend a fortune and be assured that they will have a fantastic time.
"This will be the 32nd Rotherham Show and they get better every year. We're expecting crowds of around 70,000 people this year, all of whom can expect to see the best of what Rotherham can offer.
"It's with immense pride that we can say as a town that the Rotherham Show remains one of the biggest free shows in the country, beating our Yorkshire competition by some margin.
"There are literally hundreds of things to see and do at the show. There's great food, tremendous entertainment and a wide range of activities in the best setting in the borough - Clifton Park, so, please come along and enjoy yourselves."
