Chico’s Giant of a Panto

Published Wednesday 7th September 11

It’s “Chico Time” in Rotherham as the much-loved X Factor star gets set to headline Rotherham’s 2011 pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk.

The lovable Chico reached the X Factor quarter finals in 2006 and then went onto have a number 1 smash hit with "It's Chico Time". This will be his third time in panto and Rotherham audiences are promised a performance that would have Simon Cowell himself rolling in the isles.

Rotherham Theatres Manager, Mark Scott, said: "We've had some great names light up the stage before, but in terms of sheer fun-factor and performance, Chico takes the cake. He's a fantastic performer and a real coup for Rotherham.

"It takes a lot to not only perform in front of fifteen million people on the X Factor each week, but also to win the hearts and minds of the general public enough to hit the top of the charts proving that he's a born performer.

"The panto is going to have a bucketful of extra energy this year thanks to Chico and I can't wait to see him on the stage. He has a reputation as a first-class entertainer and a really nice guy. The audience will love him.

Starting Friday December 2, preparations for Jack and the Beanstalk are well underway, with auditions recently taking place for Chico's little co-stars.

60 hopefuls filled the Civic Theatre recently to audition for a role in Rotherham's biggest show, with the lucky 12 getting the nod to take to the stage for the 71 show run.

Mark added: "We had a fantastic turn out for the auditions. Rotherham has some genuine potential superstars and it was very hard to chose between the children.

"During the auditions, we had a little help from the giant, who came on stage to have a look at who will be joining him in December. The kids really took to him and I know Rotherham audiences will too.

"Congratulations to all the young dancers who got through the auditions, and I hope those not selected this time around won't be too disappointed and will try again next year, there's too much talent out there for them to give up!"

The panto, which opens on December 2, will once again be produced by Spillers Pantomimes, who have brought gems to the stage for the past 10 years.

Mark concluded: "We haven't had Jack and the Beanstalk at the Civic theatre for the close to 15 years, so it'll be great to welcome back and old friend.

"Spillers have produced winner after winner here in Rotherham and are promising that Jack and the Beanstalk will be their best ever. From the look of the auditions, I can't wait until Christmas!"
