Learning Disabilities group raises funds for Haiti

Published Monday 1st February 10

The weekly a la carte food session at the Oaks Day Centre, Wath has been a tremendous success during the last 12 months.

Clients who attend the centre have Leaning Disabilities. Every Thursday and Friday they sample dishes from around the world, selecting from menus that feature gourmet food from over 40 different countries.

This week saw a session with a difference as they tried a menu based on food that is popular in Haiti.

The tasting was tied in with a charity event organised by staff which raised more than £170 for the Haitian earthquake appeal fund.

Every week the clients have a say in choosing the next country and, although they do not cook the food, they are involved in the presentation and they review the dishes.

Some weeks the theme can be topical but the main aim is to go to a different country every week.

These are charted on a big map at the centre. The clients love trying different foods and are becoming international taste experts.

Past sessions have taken them on a virtual food tour of the world, stopping off in Spain, Romania, Mexico, Australia and dozens more countries.

The weekly sessions are a major success and include a look at the culture of that week's chosen nation.

The session is just one of a number of interactive events that take place at the centre.
