Spine chilling show at Rotherham Theatres

Published Thursday 4th February 10

The spine-chilling tale, “A Warning to the Curious”, is coming to Rotherham Theatres to give fearless visitors a wintery fright!

Performed by the acclaimed Nunkie Theatre Company, M.R. James' 1925 tale, which is widely regarded as "the father of the modern ghost story", sees a man arrive in the seaside town of Seaburgh to search for the legendary Crowns of Anglia. In particular, the third, and final, crown, which is believed to be hidden along the sandy shores of the North Sea.

His research uncovers the tale of the late William Ager, the last of the Ager family line and the guardian of the crown. Unwittingly, a ghostly apparition of William leads Paxton to the site of the crown. Once unearthed, Paxton discovers the crown offers more than wealth.

However, our curious adventurer fails to heed the warning that returning the crown to its rightful position will not pacify the guardian spirit of Ager, placing him in terrifying peril.

Suitable for ages 13+ and described as "Storytelling at its finest . . ." by The Stage, "A Warning to the Curious" is the final instalment in Nunkie's M.R. James trilogy, following the critically acclaimed "A Pleasing Terror" and the prize winning "Oh, Whistle".

Nunkie Theatre Company was first founded in 1996 for a performance of Alan Bennett's "An Englishman Abroad" at the Canal Café Theatre in Little Venice, London. After successful production in the same venue of Patrick Suskind's "The Double Bass" and David Mamet's "Squirrels", the company lay dormant for nearly a decade before being revived by grand panjandrum and actor Robert Lloyd Parry.

Since December 2005 Robert has been performing two one-man shows based on the stories of M.R. James, the greatest writer of supernatural tales in English. His uncanny resemblance to the author has been noted with a shudder by more than one enthusiastic audience member.

"A Warning to the Curious" will be performed at Rotherham Civic Theatre on Thursday February 11 at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £8 (concessions £6).
