Rotherham Council has awarded grants totalling £11,500 to community groups and organisations ahead of the King’s Coronation next month.
In total, 23 groups have been given grants of £500 to support events that will mark the King’s Coronation.
The Coronation of His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen Consort will take place on the 6th May 2023 at Westminster Abbey, London.
Community events will be taking place over the coronation weekend (between Saturday 6th and Monday 8th May 2023) to mark this historic occasion.
The funding that has been awarded from the Council will ensure that community groups and organisations can deliver a range of activities for local residents to enjoy.
A special event will also be taking place in Rotherham town centre on Saturday 6th May from 11am to 3pm. Come along and enjoy a free family event to celebrate the King’s Coronation with live entertainment, workshops, games and more.
Councillor David Sheppard, Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, said: “The Council has awarded funding to a wide range of community groups and organisations across Rotherham.
“This will help to support events and activities that are being delivered in our neighbourhoods. A free, family-friendly event will also be taking place in Rotherham town centre.”
John Barber, Chair of Wickersley Parish Council, said: “Wickersley Parish Council is organising a Coronation Gala at Wickersley Park to enable our residents to celebrate the King’s Coronation together and to provide another opportunity for our community to meet and get together.
“We have planned an exciting day of entertainment and we are very grateful for the financial support we have received from Rotherham Council towards the costs of the gala, which will help ensure its success.”
Dawn Brunt, Organiser at Friends of Greasbrough Park, said: “Friends of Greasbrough Parks are pleased to be awarded a King’s Coronation Grant. We are hosting a community event on the 7th May at Greasbrough park to celebrate. The grant awarded will help us fund the activities we have in store for the day. The community will celebrate by bringing their own picnic. There will be music, a giant helter skelter, sack races, egg and spoon races, raffles, fancy dress, a tug of war and lots more.
“This event will bring people from all backgrounds in our community together to form new friendships and it will give everyone the chance to enjoy a free day out. We are proud of our community and Rotherham Council for allowing us to make this happen.”
Sarah Nowell, Organiser at Manvers Resident Association, said: “The grant funding we gratefully received has enabled us to develop the plans we had for the Manvers Residents Association Kings Coronation Celebration.
“We are planning an exciting afternoon with free activities for families and children, including circus skills, balloon modelling and a fire engine visit from the Manvers fire station. We have many local crafts people setting up stalls and are excited to have some small funfair rides and attractions. We are welcoming people to join us from Wath and surrounding areas and hope it will be an enjoyable day for everyone.”
Diane Oxley, Organiser at Thurcroft Events, said: “Receiving this grant for £500 will make such a difference for the community events we are staging to celebrate the King’s Coronation. Thanks to the funding, the award winning Thurcroft Welfare Brass Band are going to play inside the church during the service and then outside in the church grounds. The funding will also help towards the food for the afternoon tea as well as flags and bunting.
“Over the weekend there will be three days of events for all ages. As a community we are all working together to make his Majesty's Coronation one that Thurcroft residents will not forget.”
