Rotherham Council has launched a new Mobile CCTV Unit to cut crime and anti-social behaviour in the Borough.

Council and Police officers will use the vehicle and its camera recording system in hotspot areas, open spaces and to keep people safe at events.

Cllr Saghir Alam (pictured), Cabinet member for Community Safety said: “Members of the public have told me they feel safer when seeing CCTV. They know that the Council and our partners are trying to prevent anti-social behaviour and record the evidence needed to prosecute criminals.

“The van is fitted with communications equipment for use as a mobile command centre, making it a useful tool for various operations and community events. It also has open water rescue and lifesaving equipment”

The Council secured funding from the Home Office working in partnership with the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner for the conversion of the van as well as additional CCTV in communities. This builds on the Councils investment in to improving the Borough’s public space camera system.
