Rotherham children celebrate reading challenge success

Children from across the borough were invited to Magna Science and Adventure Centre to celebrate completing the Summer Reading Challenge.

This summer, children aged 4-11 were encouraged to join a superstar team and get involved in the annual reading challenge, this year themed around the power of play, sport, games and physical activity.

Over one thousand children and families attended the event on Sunday 1 October, which included a special performance from Savage Skills, with audiences left wowed by the agility and skills of Andrei Burton, a professional mountain bike athlete, and Tudor Asaftei, a Parkour and Free Running expert.

Rotherham Mayor, Cllr Robert Taylor and Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Cllr David Sheppard were also in attendance, presenting 15 lucky winners with a free annual pass for Magna to enjoy the local visitor attraction all year round.

Cllr David Sheppard said: “The Summer Reading Challenge has been a huge success. Over six thousand books have been read by Rotherham children this summer thanks to this wonderful initiative, which aims to keep imaginations moving over the school holidays. I’d like to congratulate each and every child who got involved and took up the challenge.”

Through taking part in the national challenge, with free materials from local libraries and online via the challenge website, children were able to access a range of books and resources to keep them reading throughout the summer.

Throughout the summer, Rotherham libraries also hosted events across the borough for children to get involved in a sport and play themed activities.

Books, magazines and online resources are available from Rotherham Libraries for readers of all ages. Go to www.rotherham.gov.uk/libraries for more information.
