Budding gardeners from Trinity Croft Church of England Primary Academy rolled up their sleeves and got involved in Autumn planting at the community garden in Ridgeway, East Herringthorpe.
The pupils are part of the school’s gardening group, the aptly named ‘Gardening Gang’ and have previously planted over 200 sprint bulbs under the careful supervision of Council Operatives from Street Scene.
This planting project gave the children the opportunity to expand their gardening skills, learn about the flowers and how they grow in their local community.
The Gardening Gang is overseen by Family Support Worker, Stacey Parkin, who has been working with the Council’s Neighbourhoods Team on outdoor projects. Stacey was also on site to lend a hand in the planting.
The project was made possible thanks to the Council’s Regeneration and Environment team, Street Scene and match funding by Ward Councillors.
The initiative is just one of many in the Dalton and Thrybergh Ward, designed to create more opportunities for children and young people, and help improve the health of citizens by connecting more people to green spaces.
The planting is the first community involvement activity on the site, which was redeveloped as part of the Council’s Towns and Villages Fund improvements.
Councillor Joanna Baker-Rogers, Ward Councillor for Dalton and Thrybergh, said: “I am pleased to hear that the children were able to take part in the planting and enjoy learning about the garden. The space was created for the community and we hope by involving people and creating more opportunities like this, the garden will be enjoyed and sustained for years to come.”
Councillor Michael Bennett-Sylvester, Ward Councillor for Dalton and Thrybergh, said: “It is fantastic that pupils are able to help in their communities with, literally, grassroot activities like this. It offers them so much enrichment while teaching them new skills and creating new hobbies they can enjoy for years to come.”
