Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the first Maltby Triathlon which has been announced to take place in May 2017.
The event on Sunday May 14 will be based at Maltby Leisure Centre which is managed on behalf of Rotherham Council by Places for People Leisure with a route and format specially designed to attract seasoned triathletes, newcomers to the growing sport and local young people alike for a day of sport.
Places for People - a social enterprise company which is one of the UK's largest property and leisure management specialists - have teamed up with HUUB Events to organise the event. HUUB Events will be drawing on their wide experience of running various triathlon, running and cycling events across the UK - including the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon in Derby. The Maltby Triathlon will incorporate three different formats.
The Sprint distance is the ultimate challenge - consisting of a 400m indoor pool swim (16 lengths), a 24km bike ride on country lanes around Stainton and Braithwell and a 5km run around the Manor Academy Fields.
The Super Sprint event is half the distance - 200m/12km/2.5km – making it ideal for novice competitors.
Meanwhile, a free duathlon event has been organised with a maximum of 100 places available for children aged five to fourteen. This will be in the form of a run-bike-run on the playing fields outside the leisure centre, it will give children the chance to try out the sport whilst the triathlon is taking place.
Claire Duffin, Race Director at HUUB Events explained: “The aim of the first Maltby Triathlon is to introduce the sport of triathlon into the local community and to attract seasoned competitors to a new venue.
“The three different formats make this ideal for everyone – whatever their age or experience – to come together and enjoy a fantastic day of sport.
“Maltby Leisure Centre is the perfect venue for this event.
“It is centrally placed with great transport links to the M18, A1 and M1 and the leisure centre has fantastic pool facilities. The surrounding country lanes are undulating but fast and the Manor Academy Fields will make a great running leg for the triathlon with plenty of space for spectators to cheer on the competitors as they race towards the finish line. “There will also be an event village with entertainment, activities, stalls and food outlets – creating a relaxed festival atmosphere.”
Paul Harpham from People for Places Leisure added: “We are passionate about creating active places for people to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle and are delighted to be working with HUUB Events to bring a triathlon to Maltby for the first time.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the triathlon community to Maltby to try this new event and particularly to introducing local people to this sport which is a fun and achievable challenge.
“Special training sessions will be held at our local leisure centres in the run up to the event to support people with their training.
“There are only 100 places available for the free duathlon which we expect to be snapped up very quickly and will make the first Maltby Triathlon a truly inclusive event for all the family to enjoy.”
