Spring into better mental health

The Council is urging people to spring into better mental health this March by getting help and support if they feel low in mood, depressed or are having suicidal thoughts.

Support is available 24/7 through Samaritans and Rotherham Crisis service and residents should be reassured that it is always ok to “break the silence” by talking to friends or relatives or calling these specialist organisations.

Spring is also the ideal time to take simple steps to improving  mental health by getting out more as the weather gets warmer, connecting with friends and family as the days get longer, and exercising outdoors - perhaps with a spot of gardening. 

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet member for Public Health, Councillor David Roche said: “ It’s not unusual to be struggling with your mental health, especially after a long Winter. Lots of people suffer and either don’t know how to get support or feel too afraid to speak out. 

"Poor mental health can be just as damaging as physical health problems so it’s important that we get more people talking and stop it being a taboo subject.  

"As well as talking,  increasing physical activity can boost mental health especially when combined with some fresh air so make the most of the opportunities that Spring brings to get out in the great outdoors and connect with people.”
