The Sheffield City Region Combined Authority Transport Committee is being invited to consider whether concessionary travel arrangements for young people in South Yorkshire will be enhanced.
The proposals, due to be discussed at the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority Transport Committee meeting on Monday 8 May, are that from 1 July the current 16 to 18 student concessionary pass scheme will be extended to cover all 16 to 18 year olds living in South Yorkshire.
This means that the proposed new 16-18 Travel Pass will be available to all young people living in South Yorkshire including those in apprenticeships and employment. The pass will also, for the first time, be extended for 16 and 17 year olds to be valid during August providing access to discounted travel across South Yorkshire, including 80p single fares on bus and tram, half price rail fare on Northern Rail and value for money operator tickets all year round.
The enhancements are being proposed by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) in response to customer feedback and recognition that all young people aged 16-18 are now required to be in education or training.
Currently only 16-18 year olds in full time education, or classroom based learning over 12 hours per week, are entitled to a 16-18 Student Pass and the concessionary fare entitlement for 16-18 year olds is in line with the academic year meaning it ends each year on 31 July, and recommences on 1 September.
The arrangements for young people aged 11-16 will remain unchanged, meaning that young people in this age bracket with a MegaTravel pass can continue to benefit from discounted travel across South Yorkshire.
Child concession fares and operator child and student tickets are available on production of a MegaTravel pass or the current 16-18 Student Pass, which proves to bus drivers, tram conductors and ticket sellers that the passenger is entitled to travel at reduced cost on public transport.
