Rotherham Council is raising awareness of sight and hearing loss in National Deafblind week

Published on Monday, 26th June 2017 in People and communities news

Rotherham Council will be hosting a series of pop-up information stalls during Deaf/Blind Awareness Week to encourage local residents to become more aware of sight and hearing loss.

National Deafblind Awareness Week runs from 26th June to 2nd July. During this week, the Council’s Sensory Support Team will be hosting the stalls at Rotherham Hospital and Council HQ; Riverside House, where visitors can access advice about deafblindness, as well as gain an insight into the assistive technology available to support people affected by sight and hearing loss.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Councillor David Roche, said: “Combined sight and hearing loss, particularly milder forms, is more common than most people think. With an estimated 394,000 people in the UK, now considered to be affected by dual sensory loss, it is likely that we know someone affected by this.

“During Deafblind Awareness Week we want to encourage local residents to think about friends and relatives who might be affected by sight and hearing loss and talk to them about it; try to understand what they are going through and learn what you can do to help, in an effort to support people who are deafblind, to enjoy more independent lives.”

The stalls will be hosted by a team of ‘Independence Guides’ from the Council’s Early Planning team, who will available to answer questions and offer support to people living with or to those who support someone with a combination of sight and hearing loss.

The Council’s pop-up stalls will be at the following locations during Deafblind awareness week:

•         Monday 26th June, 10am to 3pm, at Rotherham Hospital Community Corner, Moorgate  Road, S60 2UD

•         Tuesday 27th June, 10am to 2pm, at Riverside House Reception, Main Street, Rotherham, S60 1AE
