Over 17,000 tickets have been sold for the 2018 UEFA Under-17s Championship as excitement builds for this week’s first Rotherham games.

Tonight, Bosnia & Herzegovina will play Belgium whilst on Thursday England face Switzerland - and Rotherham town centre has been decorated with bunting in UEFA’s colours in celebration of the start of the tournament.

England’s opening game against Israel in Chesterfield last week saw the Young Lions win 2– 1 in front of a sell-out crowd, whilst on Monday they also won 2 - 1 against Italy at Walsall. They are now unbeaten in 15 tournament matches. Already, more than 7,000 tickets have been sold for this Thursday’s England game.

England Under-17s class of 2017 catapulted themselves onto the global stage in October by lifting the World Cup trophy. And they are hoping to go one further than last season’s Euro campaign which ended with a penalty shoot-out defeat to Spain in the final.

England is hosting the UEFA Under-17s football championships this year, and Rotherham is one of only five places in the country to have been selected to host the games, with the final being hosted at Rotherham United.

Rotherham Council’s Assistant Director of Culture, Sport and Tourism Polly Hamilton said: “A key priority for the Council is extending opportunity for everyone and this will be an amazingly fun event for the community of Rotherham which will put a smile on people’s faces. It’s the kind of experience which could change lives, inspire our young people to get active, take up football or aspire to turn their talent and passion into a profession.”

Rotherham United’s Head of Community Jamie Noble added: “The Championship is a fantastic opportunity for children, young people and the wider community to see the next generation of professional footballers up close and personal, here in our very own New York Stadium.”

Matches taking place at Rotherham’s New York Stadium are:

•    Tuesday 8 May - 7pm (Bosnia & Herzegovina v Belgium)
•    Thursday 10 May - 7pm (England v Switzerland)
•    Sunday 13 May - 2pm (Quarter-final)
•    Thursday 17 May - 1pm (Semi-final)
•    Sunday 20 May - 6pm (Final)

Tickets are now on sale from just £4 for adults and £2 for children from either the Rotherham United ground (available a few days before each game) or the FA website.
