It's Destination Poland for the Looked After Children's Council

Published on Wednesday, 22nd March 2017 in Looked after children - educational support news

Rotherham's looked after children will be flying to Poland for the trip of a lifetime after meeting their target of £9,000 to achieve their dream.

The ‘Destination Poland’ campaign, which started last August, will see 14 children and staff from the Looked After Children’s Council (LACC), take a five day educational trip to Krakow to learn about community cohesion in line with their anti-fascism agenda.

Since fundraising began, corporate partners, council staff and members of the public have held, and participated in, numerous activities to help the Looked After Children’s Council meet their total, including a marathon relay, bicycle ride, sponsored walk and bake sales.

Partners in the voluntary sector have also raised awareness of the campaign through spreading its message to the local community at joint events and workshops, drumming up more and more support from Rotherham residents along the way.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Cllr Gordon Watson, said: “I'm thrilled that our looked after children have met their target, they've done so well to achieve the goal which they set themselves last summer.

This is the kind of trip many of us take for granted, but it will come as a first journey abroad for many of the young people, and it’s wonderful that they've shown such determination and ambition to achieve it. I’d like to be the first to wish them all a great trip and look forward to hearing all about it when they return.”

The trip will include visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Weiliczka Salt Mines and the Jewish Quarter, learning about the historical and cultural significance of these landmarks as well as exploring the lessons learnt from some of history’s worst atrocities.

Lisa Duvalle, Lead Officer on behalf of the Looked After Children’s Council, said: “We want to thank everybody who donated to Destination Poland over the past six months, it means so much to us and especially to the young people. The generosity we've seen from everyone in the community, from the council, to friends and members of the public has been overwhelming – we’re humbled and very thankful for all the contributions.”

The Looked After Children's Council are planning to host a ‘Save the date’ event upon their return to personally thank those who contributed to making the trip happen. The event will take place on Thursday 11 May, 5:30pm – 6:30pm, at MyPlace in the theatre.
