Rotherham Libraries best in the world - official

Published on Tuesday, 5th August 2014 in Leisure and culture news

Rotherham Libraries have taken on the best in the world and beaten them in a unique online challenge.

At the beginning of June, Rotherham Libraries signed up for the "OverDrive for Libraries e-book Challenge", a worldwide online competition to encourage libraries to raise the number of customers downloading eBooks.

Over 50 libraries from across the world, from Yukon Public Library in Canada to Geelong Regional Library in Australia, took part in the one-month intercontinental face-off, with Rotherham Libraries coming out on top after having raised the number of people taking up the e-book offer by a whopping 108 per cent!

Having taken the accolade of first place, Rotherham Libraries have now been awarded a 'Gadget Jackpot', including a Nexus Tablet, Roku Media Streaming Device, Overdrive Media Station (a state-of-the-art touchscreen e-book catalogue that can be used in libraries) and also at outreach events to tempt even more people to use Rotherham’s Libraries. Plus $1,000 to spend on e-books.

Cabinet Member for Communities and Cohesion, Cllr Mahroof Hussain, said: "Winning the Overdrive Challenge is amazing, simply amazing and a fantastic achievement for Rotherham Libraries.

"There’s no doubt that our wonderful libraries have enough dedicated customers for us to be number one, and a solid communication network to tell them about the competition, but, to hit 108 per cent is breath-taking.

"Literally thousands of e-Books have been downloaded since the challenge started, opening a new world to many of our customers, who, I'm sure, will now continue to download e-books at their leisure.

"Winning the Gadget Jackpot means we can offer so much more to our customers. $1,000 to spend on e-books means Rotherham will have so much more choice in terms of what they can be download and the tablets will help choosing those downloads all the more easier.

"Thank you so much to everyone who browsed, borrowed and shared our e-books and well done to everyone in our Libraries service, you've made Rotherham proud."

A representative from the OverDrive for Libraries e-book Challenge added: "A big congratulations goes out to our grand prize winner, Rotherham Libraries in the United Kingdom, for increasing circulation well over 100 per cent – more than any other library that participated.

"While not everyone who signed up for the OverDrive Challenge hit the 25 per cent goal or higher, many libraries had their highest circulating month ever during June.

"We’d like to congratulate everyone who participated in the OverDrive Challenge and wish you continued success with the growth of your digital library checkouts."
