Clifton Park gets the green thumbs-up!

Published on Thursday, 14th August 2014 in Environment and planning news

Rotherham's Clifton Park is one of the very best in the UK - and that’s official.

The park is among a record-breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces that will have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag Award for 2014/15.

The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A green flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Clifton Park, located in the heart of Rotherham, has been a flag recipient for the past three years, making this the fourth, and is seen as a green jewel in the crown for an already very green borough!

The prestigious award signifies that the park has met the high standards laid down by the green flag scheme, namely that it is a welcoming place, healthy, safe and secure, clean and well maintained, sustainable and protects its conservation and heritage.

To be given the flag the park must also prove that it encourages local community involvement and be well managed.

Cllr Mahroof Hussain, Cabinet Member for Communities and Cohesion for Rotherham Borough Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for Clifton Park for the fourth time from Keep Britain Tidy.

“Clifton Park is absolutely beautiful and I know how proud all the staff here are of it. They’ve put blood, sweat and tears into the work to make sure the park remains at the high standard that the visitors have come to expect from it.

“The green flag is the ultimate accolade in terms of us proudly showing that Clifton Park is one of the best in the country and I’ve no doubt that the dedicated team here will continue to be awarded the flags in the coming years.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces.

“A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.

“Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”

The Green Flag Award, which was set up in 1996, is the benchmark national standard for free-to-enter parks and green spaces in the country.

Parks and green spaces are judged in April and May each year and the winners are announced in July. Parks must apply each year to keep their Green Flag Award, and winning sites are eligible to fly a green flag in the park for a year.
